Preschool Stocking Stuffers for Fine Motor Fitness

by Kelly Pfeiffer
Stuff stockings for preschoolers with small toys that develop fine motor skills and provide fun long after the holidays are over. When you add the right toys to a preschooler’s stocking, you give the gift of fun and fine motor fitness. Preschoolers need a variety of fine motor activities to strengthen the hand muscles for healthy fine motor skill development. Give preschoolers a small gift that provides huge benefits for fitness of fine motor skills.

Fine Preschool Fitness Stocking Stuffers

The following stocking stuffers are great fine motor fitness tools for inspiring preschoolers to use the small muscles of the hand. Stuff a preschooler’s stocking with these inexpensive toys and develop muscular strength and coordination for pre-writing skills.

Preschooler Sized Scissors

Small scissors provide preschoolers the right sized tool for tiny hands and fit nicely into a holiday stocking. As preschoolers squeeze scissor blades open and closed, the small muscles of the hands get a great fitness work out. Offer preschoolers thin paper such as newsprint to cut at first. When preschoolers can cut thin paper with success, introduce medium types of paper such as copy paper, junk mail and magazines. After preschoolers have experienced lots of success cutting medium thickness paper, offer heavy weight papers such as cardstock and tag board (from cereal boxes, cracker boxes or other food product boxes).

Finger Puppets for Preschoolers

Finger puppets come in all shapes, sizes and themes to fit any preschooler’s interest. As preschoolers pull puppets onto their fingers and wiggle puppet characters into action, tiny muscles in the hand get a fine motor fitness workout. As well as benefiting fine motor skills, finger puppet play supports creativity and language development as preschoolers tell a lively story with finger-sized characters. Consider finger puppets in a theme that will be of high interest to your preschooler for a holiday stocking stuffer that promotes fine motor fitness, fun and creativity.

Preschool Art Supplies

When preschoolers use a variety of art supplies, their tiny hand muscles get lots of different types of fine motor exercise. Consider stuffing chunky markers, finger crayons, fun paint brushes, finger paint and other art supplies into a preschooler's holiday stocking. Art activities are a fun way to encourage preschoolers to strengthen their fine motor skills.

Preschool Musical Instruments

Whether preschoolers grasp cymbal handles and musical strikers, hold and shake tambourines or wrap their hands around egg shaped shakers, they are developing fine motor skills when they play instruments. Child sized instruments are the perfect size for stuffing into a preschooler’s stocking. Musical instruments allow preschoolers to explore with sounds and rhythm and are great tools for developing fine motor skills.
