Fitness Adventure Walk – Movement Exploration Activity

Girl with Umbrella Walking in the Rain

by Kelly Pfeiffer

Imagination makes this fitness walk a fun adventure for preschoolers to explore. For indoors or outdoors, this movement activity requires no equipment but provides great benefits for fitness and creative thinking skills.

Preschoolers will enjoy an imaginary walk that takes them up and down mountains, through and over water and around obstacles.

What You Need

An Open Space for Children to Walk Around in

OR

A Line Taped on the Floor that Preschoolers can Walk on
For example, tape a line on the floor three feet away from the walls in a continuous path around the room. Preschoolers can walk in the same direction as you give instructions. Or tape two lines on either side of a wide hall. At either end of the taped lines, join the lines together with two more pieces of tape. Preschoolers can walk down one side of the hall to the end and then turn and walk down the other side of the hall.

Leading the Adventure Walk

Read or paraphrase the instructions below to lead preschoolers on a fitness adventure walk. Between each instruction, pause and allow preschoolers time to explore walking on or through each surface.

1. Let’s take an adventure walk.

2. Today we are going to imagine that we are walking in a wide-open space with green grass on the ground. Walk around on the green grass.

3. Now our walk has taken us into the city. We are walking on the sidewalk of a very busy city. Lots of people are all around you walking. Walk on the sidewalk in this busy city, but try to make sure that you don’t bump into all the people.

4. We have walked all the way through the city and see some mountains. Let’s walk up the big mountains. Wow it’s tough to walk up this steep mountain. Decide if you should take big steps or little steps to get up the mountain.

5. We are on top of the mountain. Look around. I see a sleeping bear. We must now go down the mountain and not wake up the bear. Let’s tip toe down the other side of the mountain.

6. Now we are at the bottom. I feel something on my shoulder. It’s cold and wet. It’s a rain drop. It’s raining. It’s raining hard. Let’s put up our umbrellas to keep our heads from getting wet.

7. We must keep walking through. Carry your umbrella as you walk through the rain.

8. It has rained so heard that there are big puddles of water in front of us. Keep holding your umbrella as you jump over each puddle.

9. Now there’s a puddle that is way too big to jump over. We must go around it. Walk around the puddle.

10. Stop. It’s a small river. We must walk across. It’s still raining so hold on to your umbrellas. Step into the river. It’s hard to walk through water. It makes our legs feel heavy. Walk all the way across the river.

11. It’s stopped raining now. Put away your umbrellas.

12. Let’s keep walking. Let’s walk through this meadow. A meadow has no trees but has lots of tall, tall grass. We must take big giant steps to step over the tall grass.

13. Oh my, here’s a creek. How will we cross this creek? I see a tree has fallen over the creek. Let’s walk over the tree. Walk with one foot in front of the other so you won’t fall off of the tree.

14. Wow! Look!  We’ve walked back to the place we started.

Create Your Own Adventure Walk

Make up your own adventure walks to coordinate with preschool themes and holidays. Preschool picture books are often great inspiration for an adventure walk.
